Bush and the Democrats

It seems pretty foolish to me for the president to spend half of a press conference bashing Democrats for holding a no-confidence vote on Alberto Gonzales and the other half suggesting that he's going to get immigration reform through the Congress. He needs Democrats on this one. He does not, on the other hand, need his conservative base. And yet he seems perfectly content to attack the majority of his immigration allies over the Gonzales issue as part of a gesture to the very people who will certainly not be swayed into supporting his reform. I've got to imagine that--for the sake of his tattered legacy--he's pretty desperate to get the package through. And yet he's making it more and more difficult for himself every day.
