It is said that McCain is failing because he stopped being what used to make him appealing -- a maverick. But recently he has been more of a maverick.
There are words for somebody who turns his rebelliousness on and off when necessary with as much facility as Eddie Haskell. Opportunist is one of them. Manipulative is another. Maverick certainly doesn't apply here.
Flip-flopper, too. McCain was against torture before he licked Bush's butt and became pro-torture.
