I could take up this issue seriously, but it's basically a weekend, so I'll just say a bit about language. Thomas Friedman (for probably the fortieth time) explains the suicide bombing phenomenon:
Two trends are at work here: humiliation and atomization. Islam’s self-identity is that it is the most perfect and complete expression of God’s monotheistic message, and the Koran is God’s last and most perfect word.
I can't possibly imagine that a single Times op-ed reader walked away from the morning paper confused by that sentence. It's perfectly clear. Eloquent even. But just in case it flummoxes you, Friedman appended a metaphor:
To put it another way, young Muslims are raised on the view that Islam is God 3.0. Christianity is God 2.0. Judaism is God 1.0. And Hinduism and all others are God 0.0.
Yup. It's that simple. Muslims are like regular western technophiles. I, for one, have not equipped my computer with Firefox 2.0.0.4, which I know to be a superior platform to the version of Firefox I find myself using right now. Ergo, I will drive a fearsome truck bomb into my laptop. If there are no more updates to the site today, that (and not Independence Day) is the reason.
