I suppose George Bush demonstrated an essential weakness by seeking to repair relations with Russia and reaching ground with its leader that both find acceptable. I imagine we'll hear lots of crowing about this from The Corner and Bill Kristol and so forth, right?
Now if we could just approach Iran in a similar way...
My reading of the NYT article differs, it seems. I noted that no numbers or names of treaties were mentioned. I noticed that Condi Lies-When-Her-Mouth-Moves Rice made the US announcement. Bush & Putin, not so much, if any.
Besides, the number now means very little, since the US has made dramatic changes in weapons design/implementation such that the increased accuracy and yield make the large numbers of warheads previously in our arsenal almost irrelevant. (Can't recall where I read this recently - but it is true, I tell ya).

I'm amenable to the idea that this is all a farce too. But it's a much better-acted farce than the farce that constitutes our "diplomatic overtures" to Iran.

Have you considered that Bushies think diplomatic overtures means US bombers flying over Iranian facilities, dropping their bombs, and saying 'fuck you very much'?
