Its worth pointing out that bedfellows often don't share beds for very long. I and many liberals I know do not support the current immigration "compromise", though for different reasons than, say, The Corner writers, who also don't support it. And, of course, I'd have no particular qualms about making bedfellows with pro-immigration conservatives on a better bill in the future.
The more I think about the bad things in this immigration proposal, the more disposed I am to wait until a better day. Yes, I'd like to legalize millions of people who are here now, with some enlightened restrictions and minor hoops to jump through.
The key fact about this bill is that (it says that)until the border is secured, no start can be made on legalization. If the bill passes, the nation will argue forever on whether the border is secure, but those 'guest workers' will be hear already.
My second complaint is that guest worker programs have created deep social wounds in Europe. We should not go down this road.
There are some bedfellows one should avoid: lice, skin sores, continuous gaseous emissions, etc. should be disqualifiers - and those on the right who support this bill have all of the above.
