I also thought this post by Marty Peretz was unusually, well, unusual.
Well, Joseph Wilson, yes, Ambassador Joseph Wilson--one is not supposed to call oneself ambassador after ceasing to be one--has endorsed Hillary Clinton for president. (Have you noticed, by the way, that she is no longer "Hillary Rodham Clinton?" Maybe she'll even start wearing dresses in her next remake).
On the one hand, in my experience Joseph Wilson doesn't call himself much besides "me" or "I". In fact, he calls himself "Ambassador Joseph Wilson" only as often as Marty Peretz calls himself "Failed Academic Turned Well-Kept Househusband Who Ruined The Magazine His Wife Bought For Him Marty Peretz."
Maybe this personal history explains his odd obsession with Hillary's masculinity. After all, she is much less a kept woman than he is a kept man.
This is absolutely hilarious...
Boy the idiocy of the this guy Marty Peretz knows no bound.

And, unsurprisingly, his assertion is not entirely accurate, even for others referring to the former ambassador. Style manuals differ, but it comes down to this (from editpros): "In balance, addressing a retired official by his or her former title constitutes an acknowledgment of the individual's public service record and conveys fitting respect. The choice of whether to use or disregard the title of a retired official is at your discretion."
So yeah, more nonsense from Peretz. As a military officer on a large joint staff, we were always told to address former ambassadors as "Ambassador".
